Sixteen
The candles' blaze is brighter now
Than yesterday
When we celebrated your ninth,
Fifth, or first year of life.
Still your dark eyes
Fringed thick with lashes
Twinkle.
And that same shy smile
As we sing the birthday song
Now reveals the glint of braces.
Boy, fast becoming a man.
The horizon beckons
Flush with promise.
